
Following interviews in early 2026, successful applicants received offer letters in early April, and up to 30 students will register for classes in August. This will double the number of students attending the CBMC, as the Class of 2029 progresses to second-year studies.Ìý
Aligned with peers at Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine campuses in Halifax and New Brunswick, CBMC students attend classes at the Sydney campus for the first two years of their medical education journey. Years 3 and 4 of their medical studies will be comprised of clerkship placements, primarily in Cape Breton and rural Nova Scotia.

Working closely with counterparts at Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine, the team has developed the CBMC program to align with its vision of providing medical education focusing on family and rural medicine pertinent to communities across Cape Breton and rural Nova Scotia. The CBMC is an integrated campus, connected with students at Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine campuses in Halifax and Saint John, NB. The three campuses follow the same curriculum, using the distributed education model, which was first implemented in Saint John in 2022. The new medical sciences building provides state-of-the-art technology to enhance learning and foster connections among the students across campuses.Ìý
A keyÌýcomponent of modern medical education, the simulation-based curriculumÌý provides students with a safe environment to study clinical skills in various formats, including the Simulated Patient Program and Volunteer Patient Program. Along with faculty tutors, opportunities for local physicians to contribute to student learning include serving as ElectiveÌýPreceptors,ÌýObservedÌýStructured Clinical Examination (OSCE)ÌýEvaluatorsÌýand Research in Medicine (RIM)ÌýMentors,Ìýas well asÌýparticipatingÌýin the Rural Medicine Week, ShadowÌýa Doctor andÌýFamily Medicine Experience programs.ÌýÌý
