7 Things to Get You Through The First Few Weeks of Classes [3 min read]

Hey CBU Students! Welcome (or welcome back) to Cape Breton University. We are so happy to have you here.听

We know starting a new semester can feel overwhelming with a lot of information to remember. So, as you gear up for the first few weeks of classes, the team at CBU has compiled a list of things that will help you start your semester off on the right foot. From getting your student ID, to connecting to wifi and participating in student events, there鈥檚 sure to be at least one thing on this list that will help you settle in.

Now, here are seven things to know for the first week of classes:

1) Explore Student Supports

We have so many resources to help you succeed academically, stay healthy and make the most of campus life. From academic advising to health services, everything can be found in the CBU Student Handbook and CBU ServiceHub.

2) Know Your Important Dates

As a CBU student, you鈥檙e responsible for adhering to all financial and academic deadlines. Bookmark CBU.ca/important-dates and check it often. This is also a great time to read through CBU鈥檚 Academic Calendar so you鈥檙e familiar with key policies and information.

4) Getting to Campus

If you take the bus, download the Transit Mobile App for schedules and updates. Riders can pay their CBRM bus fare using the Umo app, a reusable reloadable transit card, debit or credit card tap payment or exact cash fare. Riders with a smartphone are encouraged to download the Umo app, which becomes their digital transit pass and payment system. Visit CBU.ca/transit for details.

5) Stay Connected

  • You鈥檙e required to monitor your regularly, since this is our primary way of communicating with you. Missing emails won鈥檛 be a valid excuse, so make sure to download the Outlook app to your phone so you never miss an update.
  • Watch for more editions of the CBU Weekly Brief every Monday. This is where you鈥檒l hear about upcoming events and important dates, campus updates, helpful student blogs and more.
  • And don鈥檛 forget to follow CBU on and to stay in the know!

  • 鈥淐E鈥� = Campus Expansion / Culture & Heritage Building (Great Hall)
    • Rooms 241-280 are on the main floor
    • CE-258 is the RBC Lecture Theatre
    • CE-241 is the Multipurpose Room (MPR)
    • Rooms 304-360 are upstairs
    • CE 304-315 are classrooms
    • CE 317-327 are classrooms
    • CE-339 is the Board of Governors Room

7) Participate in Week of Welcome and Other Campus Events

Week of Welcome (WOW) is the official welcome to the Caper family. Each September, January and May, new and returning students are encouraged to participate in the many sessions and events held by CBU to start the semester off strong.听
