On May 16 鈥� 19 during听the 2021 Canadian Council for Advancement of Education鈥檚 (CCAE) Virtual National Conference, Cape Breton University won two medals as part of the Prix鈥痙鈥橢xcellence鈥疉wards听鈥� an annual awards program that recognized outstanding听achievements听in overall institutional advancement, including alumni affairs, public听affairs,听advancement communications, development services and donor stewardship.听
听Cape Breton University won a听gold medal听in听the听Best Indigenous Relations Initiative听category听and a silver medal听in听the听Best Use of Social Media听category.听
听CBU听was听awarded听a听Gold听Medal听in the听Best Indigenous Relations Initiative听for the Learning the鈥疞鈥檔u鈥疻ay Experience.鈥�This learning experience provided鈥痵taff and faculty of CBU an opportunity for professional development that addresses some of the calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report of Canada, as they relate to post-secondary education and institutions of higher learning.鈥�听
鈥淚 wish to recognize the tremendous work of the committee responsible for the Learning听the听L鈥檔u听Ways听initiative听at CBU.听Stephen Augustine, Hereditary Chief and Associate Vice President, Indigenous Initiatives and鈥疷nama鈥檏i鈥疌ollege and Dr. Tanya Brann-Barrett, Associate Vice-President, Academic and Research, along with teams in鈥疷nama鈥檏i鈥疌ollege,鈥痶he Centre for Teaching and Learning, Human Resources and Marketing听and听Communications,鈥澨齭aid CBU President David Dingwall. 鈥淲hen we look at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Calls to Action, this is an initiative that we can do as a University 蘑菇视频ios to learn听more听and become accountable on the journey to reconciliation. To be recognized nationally for this initiative is something I am deeply proud of.鈥�听
听CBU was听also听awarded听a听Silver听Medal听in the听Best Use of Social Media听category for听the school鈥檚 mascot,听CAPER鈥檚 social media presence during the first several months of the lockdown. From his appearances on鈥疶ikTok, to videos with the Easter Bunny,听CAPER never stopped bringing joy and鈥痶he鈥疌BU brand to听the听蘑菇视频ios.鈥�鈥�听
听鈥淐APER always loves a great party and to see all the smiling faces on campus and in the 蘑菇视频ios. The pandemic and the resulting public health protocols were difficult for CAPER as well,鈥� says President Dingwall 鈥淭hrough the power of video and social media, CAPER was able to continue to bring joy to our CBU 蘑菇视频ios and he really developed a life of his own on those platforms. I was to thank Jill Ellsworth in particular for helping bring CAPER to life for us.鈥澨�听
鈥�听CCAE is鈥痑 volunteer-led organization that promotes excellence in educational advancement鈥痑nd鈥痯rovide opportunities for networking, professional learning and mutual support.鈥� CCAE members represent universities, colleges, polytechnics, institutes, independent schools and鈥痗茅geps鈥痜rom across the country.听
